The majority of conversions will utilize a 5-Speed, of which the Ford T5 has the best gearing for our applications. The difference between a standard T5 and a World Class T5 is bearings. WC trannies have them, while the Plain Jane variety make do with bushings. Remember that an MGB weights under a ton, so getting a tranny with the right gearing is more important than getting race-quality bullet-proof innards.
Used gearboxes can be had for under $200, rebuilt World Class T5 units are out there for between $600-800.
A brand New Ford WC T5 will cost about $1400, and a Tremec-built WC T5 will be about $2000.
See the kit components section for clutches.
The other option for the GM V6 is the GM 700R4 4-speed automatic. These are getting hard to come by in the 2WD version, but 4WD transmissions can be converted to 2WD by a competent tranny shop. Used 700R4s can be had for under $200. Having one rebuilt by a shop can cost up to $1500, depending upon what is needed.
Units from the 4-cylinder and 60-Degree 6-cylinder cars bolt up directly to our V6 engine. Don't buy the one from the 90-degree V6. This engine is basically a V8 with two cylinders lopped off, and uses the much-wider V8 bellhousing pattern which will not fit a 60-degree V6.
